The Curry World – Japan & India

In Japan, there are about 3000 McDonald’s shops. How many Indian curry shops, do you think are in Japan? Surprisingly, there are about 4000 Indian curry shops.

Learning a foreign language need not be limited to vocabulary & grammar. Here at Sakuraa Nihongo Resource Centre, we combine learning the Japanese language with information about Japan, the Japanese language, and the Japanese culture also.

Most Japanese picture butter chicken and naan when they eat Indian curry before visiting India. This might be because Indian curry shops in Japan serve very big naans and sometimes you can try an  “all-you-can-eat” naan during lunchtime.

What do you picture, when you think of Japanese curry? Japanese eat thick brown curry with sticky rice. This brown color comes from curry roux which is something like chocolate and you can find many kinds of roux at the supermarket. Everyone has their favorite curry roux. Curry is very easy to cook. One just needs to add onion, carrot, potato, beef, curry roux, and water and cook for about 30 minutes. When you eat it, you will be surprised because it is not spicy and is very mild. If you have a chance to visit Delhi, please visit CoCo Ichiban which is a Japanese fast food curry shop.

Not only do the Japanese language & Indian language(s) have similarities, but so do the food and culture.

Curry is a very popular food in Japan, and everyone loves it. So, they tend to make it their way, like curry noodles and curry ramen. Besides these, “spice curry” is an in thing right now. You might wonder that Indian curry is also “spice curry”. Yes, Indian curry is also made from spice, but it is different from it. Japanese “spice curry” is made from spice and herbs and has a very light taste. Also, it is topped with many kinds of vegetables. This healthy “spice curry” attracts not only men but also young women. Some say that “spice curry is like a beverage, so one can eat two plates!”. The price depends on the shop, but it usually ranges between 600 and 800 Indian Rupees.

Listed below are some “spice curry” shops where you can find out the differences and similarities between Japanese “spice curry” and Indian curry.
